Interview 2 (two) people of Caribbean backgrounds regarding their musical tastes and backgrounds. You should have one male and one female interviewee. Choose people who are different from yourself (and, ideally, each other), in terms of either age, ethnicity, background, or other factors. People of older generations are generally the most interesting. Referring to musics discussed in class or in the book, ask questions such as: what kinds of music were they exposed to as children? What do/did they like and dislike, and why? (For older people:) What sorts of changes have they seen take place in music, especially in regard to the music they know and enjoy? Then discuss how these musical tastes and experiences reflect the background, social status, orientation, etc. of the people in question. How do people “position” themselves — or how are their tastes shaped — by their preferences and experiences? Go beyond the obvious (e.g., “she likes merengue because she’s Dominican”). Show how peoples’ tastes can be shaped by their particular backgrounds, or how people’s tastes reflect their own sense of ethnic, generation, or gender identity.
