An Expository Essay requires you to explore an idea and advance an argument pertaining to that idea. It moves well beyond a basic summary of an issue and begins to advance theories and solutions. You may not realize how frequently you have come into contact with this style of essay. Expository writing is something you are very familiar with if you ever read editorials in your local newspaper or an especially established and informed blogger. . When it comes to choosing a topic, you may find yourself pulled to issues that you already have very strong feelings about. Now is a good time to take a step back and consider: 1) Can you substantiate these feelings using academic level sources? 2) Are your feelings entirely accurate, or perhaps a personal reaction if the facts are not there to defend them? 3) Is there another topic that you could explore that you can both learn from the research process and advocate a belief you have?. In other words, a passionate opinion or deeply held personal belief may not be conducive to the best Expository Essay. Also, you may find you learn more from a topic that you are curiodfpus about versus certain.
