As nurses, we purposefully self-reflect upon our innermost thoughts and feelings to determine if our delivery of patient care aligns with and exemplifies our personal values, our self-concept, the expectations of those we love and respect, and the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses. We are continually measuring and evaluating our own growth, knowledge and insight gained from professional nursing experiences and interactions with those around us. Self-Assessment is the evaluation of our nursing practice and clinical skill measured against an expressed or established standard of practice or performance criteria. This assessment measures strengths and improvements from one point in time to another. Together, self-reflection and self-assessment form the dynamic matrix of continual learning essential for competent nursing practice. As such, these practices are used to guide both your personal and your professional nursing journey.
