Road novels are considered a quintessentially American genre, and usually involve some kind of road trip, in which the protagonist seeks to find themselves (and maybe succeeds.) Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a good example that isn’t mentioned in the article above. The US is unique because of our highway system, which allows us to drive across the country easily.
