While the functional steps for conducting the literature review are similar, the desired focus is different. In applied research, there is less emphasis on theoretical foundations and historical perspectives and more emphasis on framing the conditions of the identified problem within its context.
Creating a mental image of an approach may help you to compose your outline. Imagine you are watching a nature show about bacteria on television. To begin with the first image is of the whole Earth. As the narrator begins to speak, the camera begins to pan down its focus. The camera then moves its focus from the whole Earth, to a continent, to a country, to a state, to a city, to a park, to a bird in the park, to the bacteria on the bird. As you develop your literature review, you want a similar top down approach for the organization of your literature to the identification and framing of your identified problem.
